Tron at the IFI
Feb 15th, 2010 by Jim Kennedy
On Wednesday next (February 17), the IFI is showing the classic 1982 sci-fi movie, Tron. Consider this post a public-service announcement: if you haven’t seen Tron yet, here’s your chance.
This was one of the first films I saw in the cinema, back in the day. I saw it again last year at the IFI as part of the Darklights Festival and was reminded why it’s considered the daddio of CGI films. It’s back around again for two reasons: the IFI is doing a season of Jeff Bridges films at the moment and, perhaps more importantly, Disney has a sequel coming out this year: Tron Legacy, once more starring Jeff Bridges. Behold the lightcycle scene, where Bridges, trapped inside the computer, is forced to play video games against the mysterious ‘user’ - anyone remember playing this video game?
Here’s the trailer for the upcoming sequel. I’m posting a link as the embedding is disabled - fair enough, you probably need to see this in widescreen for the full effect:
The movie was refused a nomination for special effects on the basic that using computers was cheating - things have certainly changed in that regard, and Tron is now acknowledged as having paved the way for the direction that special effects movies have since taken.
Lightcycle scene still compelling after all this time - I have fond memories of Tron and look forward to the sequel
